Itinerary
1. Starting Point – Panauti
Your
day begins in Panauti, a picturesque Newar town steeped in history and
tradition, nestled at the confluence of two rivers. After a warm welcome at the
Panauti Bike Station, you’ll be equipped with a quality mountain bike,
helmet, and safety gear.
Before
setting off, take a short walk around Panauti Durbar Square, where
intricately carved temples, traditional brick houses, and buzzing marketplaces
tell stories of centuries past. Your guide will share insights into the town’s
cultural and historical significance.
2. Riding into Rural Nepal
Leaving
Panauti’s narrow lanes, you’ll pedal into open countryside, passing
emerald-green terraced fields, winding streams, and small farms. The air is
fresh, and life here moves at a slower pace.
As
you cycle through villages, you may see farmers tending to crops, women
carrying baskets of vegetables, or children waving with wide smiles. The Newar
architecture—with its ornate woodwork and terracotta facades—adds a
distinct charm to the route.
3. First Climbs towards Namobuddha
The
road begins to rise gently, leading into the hill country surrounding Namobuddha.
The dirt paths become more adventurous, winding through forests and over rustic
wooden bridges.
With
each turn, the views open wider. On clear days, the Himalayas emerge in
the distance—snowy peaks gleaming above rolling hills. The uphill ride is a
test of endurance, but the sense of accomplishment grows with every pedal
stroke.
4. Arriving at Namobuddha Stupa
After
roughly 12 km, you’ll reach Namobuddha, a serene Buddhist pilgrimage
site revered for its story of compassion. According to legend, in a previous
life as Prince Mahasattva, the Buddha selflessly offered his body to
save a starving tigress and her cubs—an act commemorated here for centuries.
The
hilltop stupa offers panoramic views of the Bhaktapur Valley and
surrounding hills, while prayer flags flutter gently in the breeze. You’ll have
time to explore, visit nearby monasteries, and soak in the tranquility.
5. The Descent Back to Panauti
The
return journey is a thrilling downhill ride, with cool wind rushing past as you
navigate winding trails. Along the way, you can stop at villages, meet local
artisans, or visit scenic spots missed earlier.
By
the time you roll back into Panauti, the day’s journey will have left you with
not just photographs, but vivid memories of landscapes, smiles, and stories
from the heart of rural Nepal.
